Ouch! Posted this over in the GW2G as well, but here goes:

"Warhammer Online Bug Results in More Than $300 Monthly Fees For Some

A screw-up in EA's Warhammer Online billing system has resulted in many players being charged upwards of 22 times for a one-month subscription, filling bank accounts with overdraft fees and the Warhammer forums with very angry players."

My roommate and I were just playing this a few weeks ago before we transferred to EVE. Scary, scary stuff...

..and this is why I NEVER have money taken directly out of any account I own for anything. I CONTROL how much someone gets --not a company taking out however much they wish.
(and guildwars is the ONLY online game I play so not a problem for me).

In all seriousness, that's a pretty damn big screw up on their part. I'd be pretty pissed if I got charged $300 for a month subscription (unless the game comes with free alcohol and a woman).

check the thread in the main forum -- some people are getting overcharged by a lot more than $300 (as in a few are in the thousands). These people are having their accounts emptied, plus multiple overdraft fees, and are finding themselves broke.

I'll just restate this: I have another reason to never play a p2p game -- you hand them your billing info and you trust them with your lives. These, the same game companies who in so inept doing their basic job function, ie, running an mmo.

This just goes to show that for any MMO, use prepaid CC's so they CAN'T do things like this.

This is good news for us all.

Warhammer is either going to shut down or go free to play. I bet half of the players just up and quit.

Also, think about this. How will this affect Bioware's Star Wars MMO. They are a part of EA as well. I bet people aren't feeling very safe about that now.

Anyway a win for us. This very thing could lead to the death of monthly fees.

No fees means better games. MMO players are easy. Few play more then one due to fees and time. With no more fees that chain they use to keep players is gone. They have to work on having a better game to keep players.

I received an email from EA with this title "Need more thievery? Download and enlist Kasumi in Mass Effect 2!" It kind of gave me a chuckle with all that has been happening with Warhammer.

The day company's stop charging players monthly fees is the day MMO's die. No fees mean better games? No, no fees means less money to put into the game. Monthly fees are there to allow the company to do a lot more for the game. Take WoW for example: do you really think it would have the content, updates and support it has now if Blizzard didn't make billions of dollars a year from subscription fees? No, it wouldn't.

Monthly fees are a bad thing to people who can't afford them, and good to every other player, the company and the game.

You missed the word "potentially" somewhere in that statement. Had the (lack of) pleasure of playing DDO a while back and STO pretty recently, was hard-pressed to figure out how they justified charging a monthly fee when GW was free. Especially considering both were making pretty heavy use of cash shops WHILE charging a monthly fee.

Once again, it's a common fallacy to use the best possible example when 90% of WoW's competitors are complete and utter tripe. WoW may be one of the few examples of how a monthly fee can be justified.

Crap like Age of Conan, DDO, soon to be warhammer, and in a year or so Star Trek Online will be shining examples of how a monthly fee can be NOT justified.
